It is a wintry, Sunday night on 22nd January, 2006. Having recorded their 6th draw of the season against Arsenal and their 3rd loss of the season against Man City in their previous two fixtures, Manchester United desperately needed a home win against Liverpool to ensure they stayed close to league leaders Chelsea. However, Liverpool were holding them to a 0-0 draw. That was until Rio Ferdinand rose to head the winner in the 89th minute from a Giggs free kick. At this point every member of the United team rushed to celebrate with Ferdinand, however Gary Neville dashed in the opposite direction and celebrated vociferously in front of the Liverpool fans instead. This moment encapsulated the Marmite nature of Neville, and that was why United fans loved him and opposition fans hated him. Continue reading
